You will be surprised by some of the interesting facts, like Iowa has more public road miles than there are interstate miles in the 50 states. Railcars can carry the same amount of grain as four semi-tractor trailers. Iowa is also one of the few states that has a public transit system serving every county. There are 113,414 miles of highways and roads that are publicly owned in Iowa. In the last 15 years, Iowa’s rail traffic levels have doubled. The cost to move freight by rail is 35 percent less than it was in 1985. During the 2001-2002 winter season, DOT maintenance crews plowed 24,072 miles of roadway, which was equal to about one trip around the earth—and winter conditions were moderate that year. There are also 113 publicly owned airports—eight with commercial service, 103 general service aviation airports, 130 heliports, and 74 privately owned airstrips. In addition to all the other modes of travel all ready listed, there are 1,000 miles of trails and off-road paths for bicyclists and walkers in Iowa, and two navigable rivers bordering the state, which shipped 11.8 million tons of commodities to other states in 1999.
