Kansas has the fourth greatest number of public road miles in the nation. The
Kansas Department of Transportation (KDOT) does not maintain the majority of
the State's public roads. In fact, only 9,500 miles, or approximately 7 percent of
the total number of public road miles, are included in the State Highway System.
