I was just wondering how this would work if members were spreading the word about the site themselves. I would think an effective marketing plan, targeted by zip codes of the members would bring the members of each area together. A little mapping would be involved here.

Seems members are many,  but all spread out, on their own to market an expensive site that should be marketed by the creator. Also, getting the major businesses involved  that are close to each other(market by zip code and street) , would get potential lists of all commuters in their company to find more matches. Especially the companies that do background checks upon employment, so riders and drivers would have a little extra safety, comfort.  That's how I would do  it, and because of the marketing expense, is why I didn't.
